Electricity generation in Greece has reduced carbon dioxide emissions (i.e: the main gas causing climate change) by 70% since 2012. As a matter of fact, this huge reduction has been achieved without the country suffering a black-out at this time, although there was previously a fear of a black-out in Greece. This double success of the electricity sector in our country is due to the combination of reliable, low CO2-emitting and continuously available natural gas power plants and the very high penetration of renewable sources in the electricity mix. Thus at the same time, greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced to a record level and security of supply has been maintained. This combination, alongside with energy storage projects and electricity interconnections, is also key to the next phase of the energy transition.
