Objective & Purpose

The “Hellenic Association of Independent Power Producers – HAIPP” is an initiative of the country’s largest private electricity companies. The member companies of HAIPP have made significant investments of more than €2.5 billion in eight modern natural gas power plants. At the same time, they are among the largest investors in renewable energy projects and, in the future, storage in Greece, ensuring a smooth and successful transition to a more flexible energy mix with lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Always with the aim of achieving climate neutrality by 2050,

HAIPP was founded by its members with the main objective of promoting issues related to the production and supply to consumers of reliable, economic and environmentally and climate friendly electricity, as well as the liberalization of energy markets in Greece and their integration into the single European energy market.

These flexible and distributed natural gas power plants is the guarantee for the security of electricity supply during the period of energy transition. A supply security both on a daily basis covering the fluctuations in photovoltaic and wind power production, as well as the major peaks in demand during winter and summer. In addition to natural gas power plants, the Association’s member companies are among the largest investors in renewable energy and storage projects in Greece, ensuring a smooth and successful transition to an energy mix with much lower greenhouse gas emissions.

However, alongside the effective involvement of the private sector in energy, the operation of free and competitive electricity markets, both in wholesale and retail, is a prerequisite for the achievement of Greece’s energy and climate goals. This is the reason why HAIPP, since its establishment in 2010, insists and advocates with all its public positions and actions – in Greece and the European Union – for the strengthening of competition in the Greek market, the preservation and improvement of the European market model and for the completion of market design with the integration of the markets for available electricity capacity as a building block of the electricity markets in the European Union.
